Try telling this to the housekeeping staff at my work. Every roll of toilet paper, in every restroom in every one of our facilities are backwards. Someone must have sent out a memo on that. Can’t even take a dump without getting irritated.

If it’s the other way round I have to change it, have to.
My other pet hate is when someone crushes it so it doesn’t go round smoothly.

Yeah, you clearly don't have a cat. If it's the other way, it spins uselessly when they swat at it. If it's set up like this there won't be any paper on the roll when you need it!

I have it the other way around for two reasons:
I have two cats, and as said above, it prevents them from unwinding the whole roll.
It provides just a smidge greater resistance for you when you yank really fast to tear the toilet paper off the roll. You ever go to pull it really fast - intending for it to tear - only for the roll to keep spinning and you end up with a whole mess of extra toilet paper that you now have to wind up back onto the roll? That doesn’t happen when you place it under hand.
I chose the technically superior method by using SCIENCE BITCH!

I don’t give a shit (ha) which way it goes on for the most part, I never pay attention when I change it and it just lands how it lands.
But I do notice a few things that make me happy about landing on the underhand side:
It tears one-handed easier.
You can swipe at it and unroll it easily, whereas with overhand there’s a 50/50 chance it just all gets stuck at the top.
Makes life easier in a cramped bathroom (those 4" make a difference!)
On the other hand, if you’ve got one of those open-ended swinging holders, overhand all day long.
And also: why the fuck does anyone care and why am I discussing this

For real I can’t even with under-roll. So wrong.
